The natural tendency when you are suffering from a sore throat may be to go and grab a cough drop like Halls or another big brand of cough candy. Instead there are several natural herbal remedies when healing a sore throat for yourself or for you your children.

1) Consider Using Honey to Soothe Your Throat

Sore throats can be irritating due to inflammation a dryness. Having honey in warm water may reduce the irritation. However, you’re probably not going to carry a jar of honey with you to work, or when you’re on the bus, especially since bottles of honey can get sticky. So I start doing research in the internet and find various candy producers of different sizes, types and prices. Since we are from Berlin, I’m getting in touch with the Bonbonmacherei, located in the Heckmann Höfe, Berlin. The Bonbonmacherei produces a whole variety of absolutey delicious hard candies, all hand-made. Unfortunately, they don’t have the capacity to sell their products to a commercial Christmas market retailer.

After a little bit more research I’m in contact with three medium size hard candy producers and contact them for some samples. I receive in total more than 70 different types of hard candy from three producers and all want to be sampled and rated.

I design a rating scheme for the different candies and force my friends in Germany and Canada to do some hard core candy sampling. The result justifies the method,… after having the rating from around ten people I could clearly see which candy types are liked the most and I even could see the difference between Germans and Canadians (hopefully).

The result helped as well well to identify which producer makes the best tasting candies. According to our sample candidates it is Wilhelm Mueller – Spezialfabrik fuer Kraeuterbonbons from Duisburg, Germany. The Mueller candies are a little bit more expensive as the candies from the other producers, but therefore the candies don’t have any artificial flavours, all ingredients are natural and gluten free. I’m sure we did the right choice!

So we went for a stroll on the Christmas market next to the Opernpalais in Berlin and kept an eye out for products that would fit to Vancouver Christmas Market. We saw many interesting craft and food products and enganged in discussions with the vendors about their experiences selling at a Christmas Market.

One of the huts sold traditional German hard candies, most of them all made from natural ingredients and the same time gluten free.  The hut was selling hard candies from the sugar confectionery manufacturer Wilhelm Mueller – Spezialfabrik für Kraeuterbonbons in Duisburg, Germany. Since both of us love these kind of candies, especially the Mulled Wine and Green Woodroff Leaves, it didn’t take long to realize that this is exactly the product we were looking for.

After doing a little bit of research and consulting friends in Canada, thanks Shanna, Vishana and Randi, it became clear that this type of hard candy is not really sold on the Canadian market. So we decided to take this opportunity and to introduce the more than 25 amazing products to the Canadian Christmas Market.

The idea is born, but it is still a long way to go!
